About Us

The MSU-LTU Artisan distilling program has over a decade of experience in working with numerous artisan distillers who are now in production with sales across the globe. The primary goal of the program is to assist and facilitate the development and expansion of distilling enterprises. Key elements of our program are our industrial partners. The MSU distillery is located off-campus at the 76,000 sq. ft. Michigan Brewing Company (MBC) facility in Webberville, MI (www.michiganbrewing.com).

This unique public-private partnership allows us to have commercial facilities, operated in a commercial venue. In addition, Christian Carl GmbH and Brewing & Distilling Corp. have been active collaborators and participants in the Artisan Distilling Workshop.

The MSU facility has three Christian Carl stills:

  • A 15-liter pot still for demonstration and test batches.
  • A 150-liter pot still equipped with a three tray column and a structured packing column for high rectification such as vodka production.
  • A 450-liter still designed for beer stripping or production of botanicals such as gin.

In addition to the stills, there is a fully equipped laboratory containing test fermentation and distillation equipment and a comprehensive analytical laboratory including gas and liquid chromatography.

The LTU facility is under contruction and should be completed in mid-2008. The still will be a 120 liter Christian Carl pot still equipped with a three tray column and a structured packing column for high rectification such as vodka production similar to the still at MBC.

Current funding is supplied by Project GREEEN from the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station and the State of Michigan and by the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan.
